Gene Simmons Me Inc Book Review
Gene Simmons is a man who has managed to go from being dirt poor, to becoming a world famous rockstar. In his book Me Inc he shares his wisdom with us about how to succeed in life and business.
Simmons was born in Isreal and says this about his humble beginnings:
We lived in a one-bedroom apartment, with bullet holes in the walls from the various Israeli-Arab conflicts over the years.
We didn’t have toilet paper. We used rags, which were then washed and reused.
At age eight he moved to America. He learned English, as a third language.
The book has two parts, Me (Part 1) and You (Part 2). The first part is about his upbringing and his career with KISS and the second part is about his advice for people on how to succeed in business.
No B.S. Advice
This book offers a lot of common sense, no B.S. advice. Here are a few pieces of his common sense advice:
The only guarantee you have of never getting divorced is never getting married. Marriage later. First, a successful career.
Don’t have a big family – especially if you can’t afford to have one.
Don’t buy a house until later in life. I didn’t. Renting means that you can pick up and go, without great financial risk.
If you have the cash, pay cash. If you don’t have the cash, don’t buy it.
When you’re just starting out, your every waking moment, including weekends, should be spent on launching your enterprise. Don’t let anything or anyone take away from being committed to YOU. That’s right: don’t take breaks. Don’t take vacations.
One thing I found surprising, (especially that he was a rockstar who was popular in the 70’s and 80’s) is that he has never taken drugs. To me, this really shows just how serious he is about business and his future.
I’ve never knowingly been high or drunk, except in a dentist’s chair. I’ve used that time for other things.
One of my favorite chapters in the book is Chapter 18 – Brilliant Stupid Ideas.
Gene talks about how the actual business idea isn’t so important. But what is important his how you implement it. He gave an example of how even though Martha Stewart is just an average person, she knows how to market herself well.
Stewart knows how to cook. So what? Many people do.
Its how you implement that counts.
If you want to succeed faster and bigger, you will have to choose YOU first, then everyone else. Or, as I put it, ME!!! Be selfish. Be committed to yourself first. Remember, YOU first.
Don’t waste your time
It’s up to you what you do with your free time. Do you goof around and take vacations, or do nothing after work? Do you do nothing on your weekends? Do you go to ball games or bars with your drinking buddies? Get rid of those guys immediately. They won’t help you.
I am not a fan of KISS. But after reading this book I am now a big fan of Gene Simmons and his attitude towards success. This was a great “No B.S.” business book with a lot of wisdom and blunt common sense advice.
